An Active Anti-Roll Air Spring Suspension System for a Passenger Car
Abstract: Because of high requirement on the ride comfort, handling stability and safety, more and more air spring suspension systems were used on the passenger car. Due to the relative low stiffness of air spring system in comparison with traditional coiled spring systems, an active anti-roll system is much more useful for reducing the roll movement of vehicle body. In this paper, an active anti-roll air spring suspension system was developed on the basis of the original passive air springs. The key points of this active system focus on the actuator and the control strategy. In the actuator, two additional volumes, which are connected directly with the left and right air springs, and a hydraulic or pneumatic supply element are integrated together as an linearly moveable element, which works linearly left and right to adjust and keep down the roll movement of car body. For the concept development, three types concept models of the actuator such as a full hydraulic actuator, a full pneumatic actuator and a hydropneumatic actuator were simulated with a discrete control strategy to compare on the effects of control. The full hydraulic actuator consists of a hydraulic supply system and two hydropneumatic additional volumes. The linear movement of actuator is realized with a hydraulic valve and an oil cylinder. The full pneumatic actuator is pushed left or right by a pneumatic valve and a pneumatic cylinder. Similar to the full hydraulic actuator, the hydropneumatic actuator is driven by a hydraulic valve and an oil cylinder too. But the linear movement of actuator is transferred directly to press the air in the full pneumatic additional volumes. So the air pressures of the left and right air springs are changed to reduce the roll angle. The simulation results show that the hydropneumatic actuator is the best choice for the car because of its high velocity of movement, high precision of displaceŽment und low impulse force on the actuator. So this type of actuator will be used in the car.
