Hybrid Artificial Intelligence and Structural Design Optimization Approach in the Automotive Industry
In recent years there is a growing interest in the automotive industry, especially in the design process due to the effectiveness of the optimization issues for improving the quality characteristics of the products. The automotive industry must present new approaches especially in the automotive design process to produce new products with the focus to lightweight products, which are least sensitive to disturbing factors of manufacturing and environment to make surface transport safer, more effective and competitive. In traditional approach, initial concept design is often based on experience of designers and it includes uncertainties which may cause unexpected shortcomings during the development phase and the life of the product. Therefore, researchers introduced new approaches in structural design and optimization techniques to handle the limitations during the design process. The shortcomings of traditional approaches in vehicle design can be handled by defining the optimal topology as initial design concept and by using heuristic optimization approaches such that uncertainties can be prevented with less computational efforts. There is a need to consider noise and uncertainties in vehicle design optimization considering to achieve efficient designs with respect to road safety. In addition, the optimal structure should be defined at early design stages using topology design concept, since another important problem is due to initial design which is highly depend on experience and skill of designer, this can cause in efficient design alternatives which are not optimal. Therefore new hybrid artificial intelligence design optimization approaches must be implemented to produce light weight vehicles satisfying optimal initial design criteria. The objective of this project is due to introducing a hybrid topology based heuristic design approach to provide a frame for designer in the product development phase with the focus on lightweight design while increasing environmental and transport safety issues. A case study is presented to illustrate how the present approach can be applied for solving design optimization problems in the automotive industry.
