Towards Automotive Security
Christoph Ruland University of Siegen, Germany Co-Chair Security Working Group of the eSafety Forum christoph.ruland@uni-siegen.de
Part of the strategy 2010 of the European Commission is the Intelligent Car Initiative, whose goal is to halve the number of road fatalities till 2010. The main pillars, on which this objec-tive is based, are research and development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) components to make traffic safer, cleaner and smarter, the eSafety Forum, which promotes and coordinates the work of road transport stakeholders, and the creation of awareness of ICT based transport solutions among consumers and decision-makers.
One of the working groups of the eSafety Forum is the Security Working Group. There is no safety without security. None of the objectives will be reached, if the ICT components can be manipulated, misused or unauthorized exchanged or if the privacy of users is vulnerated. The complete lifecycle of vehicles and its components will be analyzed from the design phase till the scrapping under security aspects including manufacturing, delivery, operation, maintenance by authorized and non-authorized garages, V2V- and V2I communication. If attacks can not be averted, they should be recognized and reported. The legal situation will be considered as well. The results of the working group are expected for April/May 2008.
This paper will present the achieved work and results of the Security Working Group of the eSafety Forum. The results will include recommendations of the next required activities of research, development and technology, standardisation, legislation, certification, quality assu-rance, inspections, organisation, responsibilities to provide automotive security. Because of the impact of security on safety and the society, automotive security will get also an increasing economic meaning
