In now days many researchers have given great importance to the study of piezoelectric materials (PZTs) employed in the manufacturing of sensors and actuators. Structures composed by sensors, actuators and controllers are usually called "Smart Structures" or "Adaptive Structures", which are capable to answer to variations of the external conditions. This way, these materials are very much used in vibration and noise control, and damage detection and location. This article aims to present the finite modeling of smart structures with coupled piezoelectric actuators and sensors using Lagrange´s equations. The model was implemented in a software denominated SMARTSYS, in Matlab. To analyze the proposed methodology, a numeric model of a square plate was generated in the free-free boundary condition with an actuator and two sensors coupled. The same structure was experimentally tested and the input excitation (actuator) and output response (sensors) were compared with the numeric results.
