Development of a new High Performance 4.6 Liter V-8 HMC TAU Engine
Hyundai Motor Company has designed and developed all-new V-8 4.6L SI engine, codenamed Tau. It is the Hyundai´s first in-house V-8 engine while aimed to produce class-leading specific power and torque in naturally aspirated engines. This paper shows the main features of the design and development works for the engine. State of the art in engine technologies has been included in Tau for example, double overhead cam shafts with variable valve timing, variable induction system, all aluminum cylinder head, all aluminum high pressure die casting cylinder block, and 32 bit engine control unit. The power reaches (3**) PS at 6,500 rpm with premium gas, which is over than (**) PS/L in specific power. Just a few competitors can achieve this range of power with higher engine revolution, or with direct injection in cylinder. Tau 4.6L is equipped in Hyundai´s sport luxury sedan named Genesis. In the future, the engine will be also available in different displacements with any combination of variable valve systems, direct injection, and boosting.
