Optimization of Chassis Parameters for Shimmy and Impact Noise

Dr. Bong Soo Kim, Hyundai Motor Company, Korea
Min Hwan La, Hyundai Motor Co., Korea

The vehicle ride characteristics such as shimmy and impact noise of vehicle are strongly dependent on the chassis parameters that come from the kinematic and compliance characteristics of suspension and the balance of front-rear braking forces.

In this paper, the shimmy and vehicle dynamic analysis based on behavior of mcpherson type front suspension was conducted to obtain the design parameters in the design stage. The analysis result was validated by comparison with vehicle test result. To estimate the effectiveness of the parameters, dynamic drive simulations were conducted under accelerating, constant speed driving and braking conditions. Finally, the optimization of chassis parameters was performed successfully and its process was shown.
