Digital Engineering Visualization to Support Automotive Product Creation Processes

Dr. Reinhold Klass, Daimler AG, Germany

The visualization of 3D product data on PCs becomes more and more important, especially in processes which do not use traditional CAD systems. For these processes the JT technology provides a powerful data format along with appropriate visualization tools and converters.

The usage of this so-called Digital Engineering Visualization will result in many advantages in the automotive product creation processes: low cost, easy to use, enabling non-CAD users to perform functions currently only available in CAD systems, mobility using portable DEV formats on laptops, better collaboration, reduction and/or elimination of drawings.

Based on productive examples we show how JT data are used for Digital Engineering Visualization for 3D based processes without 2D drawings, virtual reality, packaging and digital mock up, body in white and powertrain usecases, digital factory and more. We also point out future challenges, tasks and trends. Another aspect is the standardization and publishing of the JT format specification. This is the essential precondition to ensure a broad and cost effective usage of JT data throughout the process chains, e.g. for long term archiving of 3D models.
